  • What do you mean when you say "ex"?

Now, this is not really what the post is about literally..
it's more figurative.. let that question be later in the post.
Now I was talking to a friend when i said, "my ex"...
and I stopped, wondering, what does that mean?
    So I googled it!
    Etymology time!
Apparently "ex-" is a Latin term (and Greek as well)
    meaning 'out of' or 'outside'.
for example: exorbitant ~> ex-orbit ~> out of - orbit
orbit = usual course, path, track taken
ex-orbit = out of track, outside of normal course
exorbitant: exceeding bounds of custom or reason...
    That's one good example.
    In the terms of positions/relationships,
for example, ex-boss, ex-wife, ex-boyfriend (in my case)
you can think of the 'ex-' as stating that the position after no longer exists..
    It's out of commission almost..
so the ex-boss is out of the position as boss..
so 'ex-' in these terms is, to make it easier, to mean former.
Of course when we say it, we know it to mean
    the used to be,
    the former,
    the no longer,
but it's nice to know what it means and
what it is you're actually saying when you say 'ex-'
According to the Online Etymology Dictionary,
the term 'ex-' wasn't officially used to mean as it does now
    until 1929..
so it is relatively a new term.

Now back to the title question:
When there's a break up with your ex...
    what does that mean?
Does that mean you'll never speak again?
Remove every memory/form of communication you can find?
    Incommunicado for a while?
Remain friends after you come up for some air?
Still "friends with bens" (benefits) [just made it up!] when ur both single?
With today's technology it becomes more and more difficult
to completely remove someone from ur life, don't you agree?
The ex thing is becoming another job/chore...
there's alot of work involved these days.
excommunication requires removals, deletions and blocks, deactivations..
It's crazy.. the steps to ex-dom... it's a verb now...
    "Ex-ing", i'll call it..
Normally u X someone out, but for an ex-, it's ex-ing.
What does ex-ing mean to you?
